AIA tour of zaha hadid's building

A Docent discusses the architecture of Zaha Hadid’s design of the Contemporary Arts Center during a tour of the facility for Cincinnati AIA members.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Contemporary Arts Center’s building, designed by Zaha Hadid; the first museum designed by a woman in the United States, and Hadid’s first U.S. commission. This significant structure, and Hadid’s legacy, will be celebrated in a special exhibition - A Permanent Nostalgia for Departure: A rehearsal on legacy with Zaha Hadid - at the CAC from September 22, 2023 through January 28, 2024 curated by Maite Borjabad Lopez-Pastor of the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum.

This tour included discussion of the architecture of Hadid’s building and its challenge to traditional design as well as the special exhibition featuring her early work and artists responding to her legacy.

The exhibition plans to deconstruct and revive Hadid’s craft through two lenses: a showcase of her paintings and early career practice; and a selection of new site-specific responses to the CAC building itself and Zaha’s complex legacy commissioned from current artists, performers, and architects. The participating artists are creating new, site-specific works ranging in a diverse set of media that crosses sculpture, installation, textiles, sound, video, or performance and with multiple cultural backgrounds and practices.
